I knock only the door, and it is opened by an old lady with grey hair and bags under her eyes. She is wearing black worn slacks and a blue blouse which shows how skinny and hungry she looks. Before I can get even one word out if my mouth, she grabs my arm and pulls me inside. Just inside the door is a smaller we l dimly lot room.
To one corner is a rugged looking couch and to the other corner is what looks like a makeshift kitchen. All the windows are boarded up and little light seeps through them. I can barely make out the shape of a door at the back of the room. That must be where her bedroom is. Worn blankets are spread out on the floor, and the walls are I painted dry wall.
“You can’t be out there alone, child. It’s dangerous.”
“What do you mean it’s dangerous?”
“First-” she slides her hand behind her back and pulls out a knife holding it to my throat. “Tell me what your business is here. Are you a spy? Did the government send you?”
I take a few steps backward. “I um..”
She lunges at me with surprising speed an agility knocking me to the ground; the knife on my throat again. “You better by lie little girl or-” she presses and twists the knife into my knife just enough to make warm crimson liquid flow out but not enough to kill. “- this will go in much much farther.”
“Okay! Okay! Just let me up!” I scream. She lets me up and sits back on her knees looking ready to lunge again. “I’m not from the government and I’m not a spy. I came from school. I don’t know what’s going on but my friends have been taken away by the S.W.A.T. They could be killed. I just-” my voice cracks and I have to clear my throat before I continue. “I don’t know what to do. Where to go. Where to turn to for help.”
At this, the old lady’s face softens. Sympathy fills her eyes. “Sweetie, it’s okay. I know what’s going on.”
“You do? How?”
“Because I caused this.”
